What to say about Willard. This movie is very creepy and dark, but it also has some deep themes that are universal. Willard, played perfectly by Crispin Glover, is a lonely man who works at his father’s business under a menacing boss (another perfectly cast actor: R. Lee Ermey). Willard is late everyday because he has to take care of his dying mother in a big house that just so happens to have rats in the basement. After catching a white mouse, then saving him and naming him Socrates, he realizes… he can control the rats. Things really start to change after that. With a bit of a Tim Burtonish style to it, Willard will creep you out and induce compassion simultaneously.

Robin Williams is a good actor. Now, before you protest and name all the terrible movies he’s been in, think of the good ones he has played amazing roles for. Patch Adams. Dead Poets Society. Good Will Hunting for God’s sake! This man can be hilarious and creepy beyond all creepiness (see One Hour Photo). But in World’s Greatest Dad, he’s just a melancholy, failed writer trying to be the world’s greatest dad. It is a dark comedy that portrays the reality of being a human kid and being a human father trying to provide support for said human kid… and it’s not easy. I ask one thing of you upon watching this film: Do not expect Superbad. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Superbad, with all my heart, but, just because it’s from Greg Mottola, the director of Superbad, doesn’t mean it’s going to be the same film. It’s not. Far from it. It is, however, an excellent movie about real life and about real relationships. We know this because it’s based on Greg Mottola’s own experience working at an amusement park in the late ’80s. With an excellent performance by Jesse Eisenberg (The Squid and the Whale) and a great supporting cast, including the hilarious Martin Starr (Freaks and Geeks), this movie actually allows you to relate to the characters, which makes the laughter it brings so much more worth it.

Talk about an intense film. If you love music and compassion, watch The Soloist. And if you love neither (are you human?) than be prepared to be changed. Amazing performances by both Fox and Downey Jr., the tragedy will keep you glued to the screen. The world doesn’t play fair, and a lot of people suffer because of it. But then there are those who have the ability to show compassion. Maybe the universe isn’t all that bad.

In the tradition of films like 11:14, Crash and Babel, The Dead Girl follows 4 separate stories that are all linked to the death of one girl. Though it is a tragic story, it shows that tragedy can help change people… it has the ability to allow people, or sometimes even force them to have a different perspective on life. A different perspective on their own life and how they should change…
